Tips to Clean Your Outdoor Blinds

Outdoor blinds make your outdoors attractive and comfortable. They protect you from sunlight and harsh weather while giving you the privacy you need outdoors. However, blinds can be damaged due to the continuous exposure to the elements. Dirt, dust, mould and bird droppings, if left unchecked, can cause irreparable damage.

With regular cleaning, it is possible to preserve the good looks and performance of your blinds. Here are some tips to clean your outdoor blinds.

Clean Blinds Regularly

Clean outdoor blinds regularly to prevent the build-up of dust and dirt. Clean using a brush with soft bristles or a soft microfibre cloth. Clean both sides of the blind gently. Do not rub or scrub hard because it can damage the fabric.

If you are using mesh outdoor blinds, you could use a garden hose in addition to a brush to remove dirt and dust trapped in the fabric weave. Avoid using high-pressure hose though.

Do not use petrol, kerosene, oil, insecticides, detergents or cleaning products that contain solvents or alcohol as they can damage the fabric. You can use warm soapy water or even better a cleaning product specified by the manufacturer of the blinds.

Keep Your Blinds Dry

Once you finish cleaning, allow the blinds to dry completely. Retract them only after they are completely dry. Otherwise, mould can form on the blinds, which can stain or damage the fabric.

Avoid cleaning the blinds during humid weather for the blind may not dry completely in such conditions, which again leads to the risk of mould and mildew formation.

Avoid High-Pressure Cleaners

Avoid using steam cleaners, rotary brushes and pressurised water cleaners on the blinds. Do not use any abrasive cleaning material as it can scratch and damage the fabric.

Get Rid of Animal and Tree Deposits Immediately

Tree debris, sand, soils, vegetable waste and bird and bat droppings are some deposits that you might want to remove immediately from your outdoor blinds. Left ignored, these deposits settle in the blind fabric and cause the fabric to lose its colour. The stains, over time, can damage the fabric.

If you find any bird, plant or soil stains that are hard to clean, leave a sponge dipped in warm water on the stain until the spot gets well-moistened. Then, remove the sponge and wash the spot using clean water.
